Our social studies curriculum is aligned with the New York State Social Studies Framework and focuses on helping students develop:

Grade-Level Focus

Kindergarten: Self and Others

Students examine themselves, their families, school, and community through the lens of social studies. Topics include:

• Rules and responsibilities
• Basic needs and wants
• Diversity in the classroom and community
  
• Holidays and traditions
  

Grade 1: My Family and Other Families, Now and Long Ago

Students examine families and develop awareness of cultural diversity within American culture. Topics include:

• Family structures and roles
• Change over time in families and communities
• Folklore and cultural traditions
• Goods, services, and economic concepts

Grade 2: My Community and Other Communities

Students study their local community and compare it with other communities around the world. Topics include:

• Urban, suburban, and rural communities
• Community resources and services
• Geography and map skills
• Cultural similarities and differences

Grade 3: Communities Around the World

Students explore global communities with an emphasis on diverse cultural perspectives. Topics include:

• World geography and cultural regions
• How environment shapes communities
• World cultures and belief systems
• Economic systems around the world

Grade 4: New York State and Local History

Students explore New York State, its history, geography, government, and economy. Topics include:

• Native American groups in New York
• European exploration and colonization
• New York's role in the American Revolution
• Immigration and industrialization
• New York State government

Grade 5: The Western Hemisphere

Students study the geography and history of the United States, Canada, and Latin American nations. Topics include:

• Early peoples of the Americas
• European exploration and colonization
• Geography of North and South America
• Cultural diversity in the Western Hemisphere
• Western Hemisphere in the global context

Materials

Students are expected to have the following materials for Social Studies:

• A dedicated section in their binder or a separate folder

• Scissors, glue sticks, and markers for projects
