Expectations

Keep in mind - We are preparing them for Middle School! We want them to be their own advocates!

• 30-40 minutes of reading every night
• Zearn Lessons in class
• Connect to Class Dojo
• Basic Clean & Organizational Skills
• Communication - Folders MUST be checked EVERY DAY!

Attendance / Punctuality

It is important that your child be on time. The children are picked up from the Auditorium at 8:00 AM. First period begins promptly at 8:00 AM. Lateness will result in your child missing instructional time.

Dismissal

2:14 PM at EXIT 5 every day (Dongan Hills Ave - Big Schoolyard).

Class Business

Absences

If your child is absent, please send in a note on your child’s return to school. The note should include:

• Day(s) and date(s) of absence
• Reason for the absence

Money Collection

There will be times when money must be brought into school. We ask that the money be placed in an envelope. Seal the envelope, and on the front, place the following information:

• Child’s name
• Class #
• Amount of money enclosed
• What the money is for

This will help direct the money to the proper place.

Dismissal Changes

If there will be a change in the usual dismissal procedure, please let us know in writing, or if an emergency arises, please contact the office.

Please Do Not DoJo During The Day.

Student Water Bottle Policy

Effective this school year, metal water bottles will no longer be permitted in school!

If a student brings a water bottle that does not meet requirements, the following procedures will be followed:

1. Parents will be contacted.
2. The water bottle will be collected and the teacher will return it at the end of the day.
3. The water bottle will be collected and the parent must come up and pick it up from the administration’s office.

Birthday Celebrations

Please provide notice one week in advance stating what you would like to bring in for your child’s birthday. Please keep it simple. Parties will be celebrated in the classroom.

• Please NO goodie bags!
• NO siblings permitted.

Lunch, Band & Snack

• Lunch is at 12:30 every day.
• Band is taken on Thursday and Friday afternoons.

*Please send your child into school with a working snack each day.

Homework

Homework will be assigned Monday-Thursday. Homework will be posted on Class Dojo. If your child is absent, they must do their best to complete the assignments. You will be notified after 3 missing homework assignments. If there are special circumstances that prevent your child from completing their homework, please send BOTH of us a Dojo message letting us know.

Please look over their homework each night. If your child is struggling with the homework, please circle the question. It will be their responsibility to let us know so we can help them work on that topic.

Part of the homework is to read every night. Children are expected to read at least 30 minutes every day.

All loose homework pages are to be glued into their Homework Notebook before arriving to class. We quickly spot check the homework each morning and address misconceptions during an appropriate time in our day.

We are preparing them for Middle School

Reading

The reading program in use is HMH Into Reading. The program is aligned with the NGLS Learning Standards. The program consists of a student workbook and pieces of literature. It also has many leveled readers that we will use during differentiated instruction, learning skills and strategies. The series contains many components including: Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Grammar.

As part of literacy, there will also be small reading groups guided by the teachers to work on specific reading skills. This helps the students build their reading skills and strategies to help them succeed in reading.

Book Clubs

This is a way for students to work in a group and discuss what they are reading. This helps them learn from each other, build discussion and learn about many genres.

Math

Number Sense

• Place value from millions to thousandths (prior knowledge of whole number place value, ones to millions)
• Multiplication and Division of large numbers, both whole and with decimals (prior knowledge of multiplication tables 1-12)
• Comparing numbers (>, <, =)
• Word form, expanded form and unit form

Fractions

• Addition and Subtraction
• Multiplication and Division
• Decimal/Fraction relationship
• Comparing Fractions (>, <, =)

(Prior knowledge of equivalent fractions, mixed numbers and improper fractions, and simplifying or reducing)

Word Problems

Students will use C.U.B.E.S. to be able to approach and solve word problems.

Writer’s Workshop

The students will be working through the writing process to produce published pieces. This year we will be working on narrative, informative, and opinion pieces.

We are starting the year off with an informational piece where they will research an inventor that has changed people’s lives.

State Tests

There are 3 New York State Exams that your child will be taking in the 5th grade on the computer.
