At PS 52, we are committed to creating a safe, respectful, and academically focused learning environment. In alignment with New York State Education Department guidance and Chancellor’s Regulation A-413, we are implementing a “Bell-to-Bell” Cell Phone Policy for the 2025–2026 school year. To ensure our students remain engaged and focused throughout the school day, we are asking for your support in reviewing and reinforcing our updated policy. This policy is designed to minimize distractions, support student engagement, and ensure the safety and well-being of our school community. It applies to all personal internet-enabled electronic devices, including but not limited to: cell phones and smartphones, smartwatches, laptops and tablets, portable music and gaming devices.
Students are not permitted to use personal internet-enabled devices during the school day, which includes class time, lunch, recess, and hallway transitions. Students will have access to school-issued devices for instructional use as needed. Upon arrival, students must: - Power off their devices - Store cell phones, smartwatches, and other electronic devices in designated pouches within their backpacks during school hours - Keep them off and out of sight until dismissal.
If you need to reach your child during the school day, please contact the main office at (718) 351-5454 and press “0”. Students will not be allowed to use personal devices to communicate during school hours (7:40AM-2:20PM). Exceptions: Device use may be permitted under the following circumstances: - If required by an IEP or 504 Plan - For specific instructional purposes, with teacher or administrator approval - For medical monitoring or other approved exceptions (please contact the school to discuss.)
Devices may be used outside the school building after dismissal. This same policy is in effect during after school programs, including the NIA Program.
To support students in following this policy, we will use a progressive discipline approach: First Offense: Verbal reminder of the policy Second Offense: Device will be held and returned to the parent or guardian Repeated Offenses: Parent/guardian will be contacted; further disciplinary action may follow
Please note that P.S. 52 is not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged devices. In the unlikely event that an electronic device is lost, stolen or damaged at school, parents can submit a claim to the Comptroller’s Office. More information on submitting a claim is available on the Comptroller’s webpage.
We appreciate your partnership in helping us maintain a positive and productive learning environment. If you have any questions or need further clarification, please don’t hesitate to contact the Parent Coordinator, at (718) 351-5454.
Sincerely,
