Welcome to the PS 52 Library and Technology program! Our integrated library and technology curriculum is designed to develop information literacy, digital citizenship, and a lifelong love of reading. In our program, students learn essential research skills, explore diverse literature, and develop technological competencies that will serve them throughout their academic careers and beyond.

Library Program

Our library program aims to develop information literacy skills and foster a love of reading through access to diverse literature and resources. Students visit the library weekly to check out books, participate in read-alouds, learn library skills, and engage in research projects.

Library Skills

Throughout the year, students develop the following library skills:

Locating and selecting appropriate books independently
Understanding library organization and the Dewey Decimal System
Identifying various literary genres
Using online catalogs and databases
Evaluating information sources for credibility and relevance
Developing effective research strategies
Properly citing sources

Technology Program

Our technology program is designed to develop digital literacy skills that enable students to effectively and responsibly use technology for learning, creation, and communication. Students engage with various digital tools and platforms to enhance their learning across all subject areas.

Technology Skills

Students develop the following technology skills through hands-on experiences:

Keyboarding and basic computer operations
Word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software
Digital citizenship and online safety
Internet research techniques
Introduction to coding and computational thinking
Digital content creation (graphics, audio, video)
Collaboration using online platforms

Grade-Level Focus

Kindergarten

Library: Book care, parts of a book, library rules, author/illustrator roles, fiction vs. nonfiction
Technology: Basic computer and tablet use, mouse skills, logging in, introduction to educational apps

First Grade

Library: Library sections, alphabetical order, story elements, reading responses
Technology: Keyboarding introduction, word processing basics, drawing programs, digital storytelling

Second Grade

Library: Call numbers, fiction genres, using the library catalog, character studies
Technology: Internet safety, basic research, presentation basics, introduction to coding

Third Grade

Library: Dewey Decimal System, reference materials, biographies, research process
Technology: Typing skills, advanced word processing, online research, digital citizenship

Fourth Grade

Library: Information literacy, note-taking, research projects, literary analysis
Technology: Typing skills, advanced word processing, online research, digital citizenship

Fifth Grade

Library: Advanced research skills, evaluating sources, literature discussions, citation formats
Technology: Digital project planning, data analysis, media production, robotics and advanced coding

Library Policies

Book Checkout

Students may check out books for a two-week period
Kindergarten - 1 book at a time
First and Second Grades - 2 books at a time
Third through Fifth Grades - 3 books at a time
Books must be returned or renewed before additional books can be checked out

Lost or Damaged Books

If a book is lost or damaged beyond repair, families are responsible for the replacement cost of the book. A notice will be sent home with the title and cost information. If a book is found after payment, a refund will be issued.

Use quiet voices in the library

Return materials to their proper places

Respect others' reading and work space

Follow checkout procedures properly

Technology Resources

Our technology program utilizes various resources that students can access both at school and at home:

Mobile Devices: Chromebook and iPad carts are available for classroom use
Google Workspace for Education: Students in grades K-5 have Google accounts for accessing Google Classroom, Docs, Slides, and other applications
Learning Platforms: Access to educational platforms such as Zearn, Epic Books, Typing Club, Code.org, and other grade-appropriate resources
