From the Principal

September was an exciting time for our children as they returned to school and saw their friends and teachers after the summer vacation. Our children look just beautiful in their uniforms (thank you parents) and it really has made a positive change in our school culture. We’re looking forward to a great year at P.S.52. Your children will again have the opportunity to participate in our academic and extracurricular activities.

Our attendance so far this year has been excellent! Thank you for all of your efforts to have our children in school daily. Children who eat school breakfast in school can enter the building at 7:40 each morning. These children need to arrive in time to eat and report to their lineup locations by 8:00. All other students may lineup at 7:50. Children who aren’t at their morning lineup locations by 8:00 are marked late. We appreciate your help in bringing your children to school on time so that they can begin the day with their classmates.

The entire staff at P.S. 52 continues to work towards college and career readiness for our students. Our entire school community is working to address our Instructional Focus, “All staff and students at P.S.52 will engage in a whole school initiative to raise student achievement by maximizing student engagement. We will work to ensure that all students are intellectually engaged in challenging content through well designed learning tasks and activities that require complex thinking by students”

To better serve our students and address our instructional focus, we are holding weekly parent meetings to familiarize our parents with the requirements of the Common Core Standards and with the resources available to you. It was wonderful to see so many of you at our Parent Curriculum Conferences on September 16th. The purpose of these conferences is to present to parents early in the year the opportunity to meet their child’s teacher and get an overview of the goals for the grade in all subject areas, homework policy, materials used for instruction, standardized tests and other important items specific to each grade. Your participation prepares you and your children for a successful year, thank you for attending.

As you may be aware, P.S.52 is now within a ‘Neighborhood Slow Zone’. This has changed several of the traffic regulations in our neighborhood. Among these changes are reduced speed limits and increased penalties for infractions. We have been notified by the NYPD that they will initiate Zero Tolerance Enforcement around our school. This initiative focuses on traffic safety concerns which include double parking and making illegal u-turns. The safety of our students is a shared responsibility and I cannot stress strongly enough the need to put safety first at pick up and drop off. Working together, we can provide a safe, effective learning environment for our children. Thank you for your help.
